Stevie Lee is a physical,
tough and powerful fourth-year defensive lineman who experimented
with switching to offensive line last spring. This fall he returned
to defensive tackle, a position where he has played in 28 career
games. Recently, Lee took time to talk with MackBrown-TexasFootball.com
about switching back to the defensive side of the ball, how good
Phillip Geiggar is at returning punts and how he spent his free
time last weekend.
You were teammates
with Phillip Geiggar in high school. Are you surprised at how well
he's returning kicks this summer?
"Not at all. I remember back in high school he always had a
knack for seeing the field and making big plays on kickoff returns.
I've been watching him eight years, so I'm not the least bit surprised
at how well he's doing."
You spent some
time on the offensive line in spring drills before moving back to
the defensive tackle position. Are you glad to be back on defense?
"Absolutely. I had a good time on offense and I learned a lot
of things, but I talked with Coach Brown, and we felt the best thing
for me and the team was to be on defense. I'm a lot more comfortable
on the defensive side of the ball, and I'm glad how things worked
out."
You mentioned you
learned some things working on the offensive side of the ball. What
were some of the things that you picked up that will help you on
defense?
"Coach Tolleson always tells us how important GOB's are. That
means Get Off the Ball. When you are on offense you realize how
fast the guys on defense are coming and how hard it is to stop them
when they are quick off the ball. It really sinks in what Coach
has been telling us about getting off the ball when you see it first
hand."
How does the defensive
line look this year?
"It looks better than ever. I think Casey Hampton and Shaun
Rogers were two of the best defensive lineman to ever play here,
but overall this is the best group. Our top eight on the line are
solid, and I think we're going to have a lot of fun."
The team had last
Saturday off. How did you spend your free time?
"I went out to dinner with my girlfriend and got some barbeque.
Then we just kind of laid low and rented some movies. We watched
"The Legend of Bagger Vance" and "Basic." There
was a third one we rented, but it was so horrible I don't even want
to mention it."
