Two-Minute Drill: Selvin Young
» Two-Minute Drill archives
How did you spend
your free time this summer?
"Honestly, I don't really remember having much free
time. I took a couple of classes this summer and I was working out
a lot to get into shape for the season. I went back home to Houston
for a little while and saw some friends and family, but for the
most part I was in Austin taking care of business and getting ready
to play football."
What did you do
to get into shape?
"A lot of running and lifting weights. The running backs
do a lot of sprints and we also do some distance running. The distance
running is about a quarter of a mile and we do that about eight
times, but it feels like a lot longer."

Did the workouts
help?
"I think I'm in the best shape of my life. Coach Madden
and his staff are so good at what they do that I think anyone working
with them is going to see a lot of improvement. For me, I can see
a huge difference in my strength and speed compared to when I came
in as a freshman."
Besides being in
better shape, how do you feel heading into two-a-days?
"I'm a lot more comfortable. I know the whole team and
how everything runs in practice. Last year I was a wide-eyed freshman
and everything was new to me. This year it will be a little easier
to focus and do my job. We've been doing seven-on-seven drills this
summer and that was something I wasn't able to do last year. It
really helps to be out here with the guys and work on running routes
and where I would need to be in blocking situations. Plus it's a
lot of fun because it's a very relaxed atmosphere."
Does it matter
to you that you will have a new quarterback handing the ball off
to you this year?
"Not at all. As a running back you just want to help
move the offense and run with the ball. I think I'll have that opportunity
this year and it doesn't matter who is taking the snaps at the quarterback
position. I've worked with all three of our quarterbacks and they
all are very good and capable of leading our offense."
You said you know
the team and how practice runs after one year at Texas. However,
you still claim you don't know the city of Austin very well?
"I really need to make time and take in the sights of
Austin. It's a really great city, I've just been so focused on school
and football that I haven't ventured out too much. Next summer I'm
going to make sure I see a little more of Austin."
