Two Minute DrillTwo Minute Drill: Brian Carter

» Two-Minute Drill archives

Brian Carter, a redshirt junior out of The Woodlands, Texas, is competing for action at the flanker position going into the 2004 campaign. His speed and quickness will be an asset to him as he, and the rest of the receiving corps, try to replace 120 out of 186 receptions made last season. Carter has played in 22 games over his career, including all 13 last season, but he is looking forward to big things in 2004.

Where do you feel you are right now in the mix at wide receiver?
You're always working to be a starter. When you're at a major university like Texas, that is the ultimate individual goal. Right now, I feel like I'm a solid third wideout, as far as a sub at flanker, and I have been getting reps at the Z (flanker) position with Tony Jeffery. I'm excited about the opportunity I have.

How has it been working with your coach Bobby Kennedy?
Coach Kennedy is really excitable, and he gets on us a lot about our technique. He is definitely making us pay attention to detail, which is going to do nothing but help us out in the long run. I feel really comfortable with him.

How did you improve yourself physically throughout the summer in preparation for the 2004 season?
I put on a lot of weight in the weight room, increasing my maxes. I got my bench up to about 330 lbs. I broke the 300 lbs. mark with my power clean and I got my squat up around 400 lbs. I feel like by putting in the extra work and training, we are more prepared for the year, because it is going to be a long season.

What kind of goals do you have for this season, both on a personal and a team level?
Our ultimate goal is obviously a national championship, but sometimes, in college football today, you can't always control that. Our focus is to try to win the Big 12 and if we do that, we should be playing in a BCS bowl game and be considered for the national championship.

Personally, I want to take advantage of my opportunities. If they throw me 50 balls, then I want to catch 50 balls. If they throw me 20 balls, then I want to catch 20 balls. Other than that, I'm just going to do whatever I can to help the team, whether it be catching balls or blocking or anything else.
