When the Longhorns were down 35-7, it was the job of the veterans on the team to make sure everyone stayed confident about a comeback. Fifth-year senior Phillip Geiggar was one of those who took on that role and led UT all the way back and then some. The Shreveport, La. native made five tackles and broke up a pass to keep Oklahoma State out of the end zone in the waning minutes of the game. He stopped to talk with MackBrown-TexasFootball.com about the comeback and the upcoming game with Kansas in this edition of the Two-Minute Drill.
On taking a leadership role when the team is behind:
The first thing you have to do is keep everybody calm and don't let anybody panic. You have to know that the game isn't over and there was a lot of time left. We have to be confident that just as quickly as they scored, that we can do the same thing.
On being confident in a come back:
We knew that we didn't have to do too many things different, that we just had to fix some things. We knew we could play with them, so nothing really went on in the locker room. We just knew what we had to do.
On the team's mentality:
It really starts with us trusting and being comfortable around each other. We know that each member of the team is going to get their job done and that shows just how close this team is. We know we don't have to panic to get something done.
On making the play to keep OSU from scoring at the end of the game:
Everybody knows that if they would have scored, we still would have won the game, but it comes back to pride. We don't want to let anyone get in the end zone. It hurts us when a team scores, so it is definitely a big pride thing with the defense.
On making sure you are ready to play against Kansas:
Kansas had some teams behind this season and they are a good team, so we definitely have to be ready to play. We know we are a good team so we need to keep doing what we've been doing. As long as we give them their respect, we should be fine.
On carrying the momentum through this week:
I think the momentum will go a long way, maybe even the rest of the season. We were down so much and made such a great comeback that I think we can carry that through the rest of the year.
