Longhorns Diary: Eric Foreman

» Diary archives

  Eric Foreman
Fr. LB Eric Foreman introduced by Head Coach Mack Brown on day one.

Eric Foreman, a first-year linebacker, was one of five true freshmen who saw action on the defensive side of the ball in the Longhorns' season-opening 66-7 victory over New Mexico State. In his first collegiate game at linebacker, Foreman recorded four tackles and had two solo tackles. The Corrigan, Texas, native was a first-team all-state (2A) selection at defensive back and a second-team choice at quarterback as a high school senior at Corrigan-Camden. Foreman recently took the time to talk to MackBrown-TexasFootball.com about his experience in his first collegiate game, adjusting to the linebacker position, who has helped him the most with his adjustment and his adaptation to college life.

"Playing in my first collegiate game was a pretty new experience. I had to get used to it in a hurry after I got in the game. It took me about two or three plays to get used to the transition of the game. Coming right out of high school playing in my first big collegiate game was an eye-opener. The speed of the game was fast, but I got the hang of it rather quick. The speed of the game was probably the biggest adjustment. Everything has been an adjustment, however, since day one because I mostly played quarterback and free safety in high school. I was a big safety, so my agility has really been helping me out. I think my agility has really helped make the transition to linebacker a little easier.

I'm still learning the position every day in practice, and Reed (Boyd) and D.J. (Derrick Johnson) have really been helping me out. They have showed me how to take on blocks and how to lead. I've learned how to get off the ball better and get in the mix more often. Reed has talked a lot about blitzing as well. He was commenting on how well he thought my agility was, and he was teaching me how to use it in different ways and how to make my moves more precise. As far as my transition to college life, I think it has gone well so far. I stress the ‘so far’ part because I think I have done a good job managing my time up to this point. Hopefully it continues and I continue to learn the linebacker position and improve my game."
