Q&A with Roy Williams
What are the team's goals with only a
few games remaining?
"We just want to win these next four games and see what
happens. Nebraska snuck into the National Championship game a couple
of years ago with two losses, so you never know what is going to happen.
If Oklahoma continues to win, they will play for the National Championship,
but we could still get a BCS spot if we continue to win. A BCS berth
is something the team would like to accomplish."
Of your next four opponents, two are
nationally ranked. What approach does the team need to take in preparing
for these games?
"We need to treat these teams the way we have treated
every other team this season. We can't allow the ranked teams to be
treated differently because the unranked ones can beat you, too."
What are your feelings about the two-quarterback system and how do
you adjust your playing style to match each one?
"The two-quarterback system is working well. I know that
when Chance is playing, he's going to throw the ball. When Vince comes
into the game, it's going to be a pass-run option. I don't find that
I have to make any adjustments when one is on the field as opposed
to the other. They are both very similar with the exception that one
runs faster than the other. It was different back in the days with
Major and Chris because one was right-handed and the other was left-handed,
so I had to adjust to the ball coming from different directions."
You have become quite a leader on this year's team. With only a few
games left in the season, are you going to change your leadership
approach or do you feel your teammates are responding the way they
should at this point in the season?
"I think that what I am doing now is fine. I don't have
to lead with words. I lead by example, especially the way I have been
practicing lately. I've been working harder in practice and I think
the guys see that. It's not important that I lead by speaking but
that I lead more by example."
A lot has been said about your preseason workout and training regimen.
Can you tell if all your hard work has paid off?
"It has worked because I'm still running. Sometimes I'm
on the field with the punt return team and then I have to return to
the field to play offense. This can be a very tiring time of the season,
but my ability to recover is now much quicker, so I'm not as tired.
I definitely think the workouts this summer paid off."
In last year's game against Nebraska you had 13 catches for 161 yards.
Are you looking for that kind of performance this year as well?
"I've been looking for this kind of game all year. Last
year, Nebraska played a lot of man-to-man and we took advantage of
that. They probably won't play it that much this year, but I'm still
hoping for another 13 catch performance."
What is your outlook on the game against Nebraska?
"We are both good football teams, so it's going to be
a good game. The turnovers are going to be the difference in this
game. We're going to need to protect the ball and then force them
to turn the ball over."
How are you feeling knowing that your final two home games as a Longhorn
are quickly approaching?
"I'm fine. The last game, Senior Day, will probably be
very emotional, but we're playing Texas Tech and I hope to come out
with a win. My brother played at Tech so a win would allow me talk
about the game for the rest of my life. Texas has been really good
to me. I've had a great time and I wish it wouldn't end, but I do
need to move my career forward." |
