AUSTIN, Texas - The first edition of the Bowl Championship Series standings were announced on Monday night and The University of Texas (6-1, 3-1 Big 12) earned a No. 6 ranking, the highest of any team with a defeat.

"This is the time of year when polls finally begin to matter and we're really excited to be in the mix for national honors," Texas head coach Mack Brown said. "This team has earned that respect, and with all of the football left to play, who knows what will happen.

"What we have to do is to keep improving and concentrate on the next game. You can't win the rest unless you win the next one, and if we win the rest, we have a chance for some very good things to happen. But we have to beat Missouri on the road and that's the only thing we can control this week."

The Longhorns, who are currently ranked seventh by both The Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Polls, trailed only Oklahoma, Nebraska, UCLA, Miami and Virginia Tech in the standings.

In their six victories in 2001, which includes a 44-14 victory against a North Carolina team that is currently ranked No. 23 and a 41-7 win against No. 14 Colorado, the Longhorns have won by an average score of 44-13. UT's lone loss this season came in a hard-fought 14-3 defensive struggle with No. 3 Oklahoma, which currently ranks first in the BCS standings. That game was a 7-3 contest until the final two minutes of the game.

Texas travels to Missouri (3-3, 2-2 Big 12) on Saturday riding a five-game road winning streak.

The Horns finished 12th in last year's final BCS standings.
