Fifteen
Longhorns named to Academic All-Big 12 Team
DALLAS
- Fifteen members of the fifth-ranked Texas Longhorns were named
to the 2001 Football Academic All-Big 12 Team, the conference announced
on Tuesday afternoon.
Offensive
guard Trey Bates (undeclared), center Jason Glynn (undeclared), defensive
back Bradford Hermes (accounting), deep snapper Cullen Loeffler (business
administration) and running back Brett Robin (kinesiology) were the
five Longhorns selected to the first team. First-team members consist
of those student-athletes who have maintained a 3.2 grade-point average
or better.
Offensive
tackle Robbie Doane (corporate communications), tight end Brock Edwards
(undeclared), special teams standout Richard Hightower (business administration),
offensive guard Tillman Holloway (business administration), defensive
end O.J. McClintock (youth & community studies), offensive lineman
Robby Nethercut (government), special teams performer Tien Van Nguyen
(government), wide receiver Sloan Thomas (undeclared), defensive end
Kalen Thornton (undeclared) and fullback Matt Trissel (communication)
were each second-team selections. To be eligible for the second team,
student-athletes must maintain a 3.00-3.19 GPA.
Doane,
Loeffler, Robin and Trissel each earned academic all-conference honors
for the second consecutive season. Thornton was named to the Verizon
District VI Academic All-America team last week and is on the ballot
for the Academic All-America team.
