Redding named a Hendricks Award

MIAMI — University
of Texas defensive end Cory Redding (Houston, Texas) was named one
of 10 semifinalists for the inaugural Ted Hendricks Defensive End
of the Year Award, the Miami Touchdown Club announced on Thursday.
Redding, coming off one of his finest games has
a Longhorn (seven solo tackles, four TFLs and two sacks at No. 17
Kansas State), has posted 39 tackles (28 solo) and a team-high 24
QB pressures, eight TFLs and three sacks this season. A starter
in all of UT's previous 31 games, he also has forced a pair of fumbles
and recovered one for the nation's third-ranked defense (255.1 ypg).
The 1998 USA Today prep Defensive Player of the Year has registered
174 tackles, 64 QB pressures, 41 TFLs (T-No. 9 on UT's all-time
list) and 16.5 sacks during his Longhorns career and averaged better
than eight yards per loss on his 16.5 career sacks.
A prominent committee of more than 40 coaches,
national media members and sports information directors selected
the semifinalists list. On-field performance, leadership abilities
and contributions to school and community are some of the criteria
that will be used to determine this year's winner. The candidates
may be from any class (freshman through senior), as well as from
any recognized four-year NCAA accredited school (Division I-III).
