Sixteen Longhorns named to Academic
All-Big 12 teams
DALLAS
-- Sixteen members of the 10th-ranked Texas Longhorns were named
to the 2002 Football Academic All-Big 12 teams, the conference office
announced on Tuesday.
Redshirt freshman C Will Allen (undeclared), sophomore OG Trey
Bates (communications), senior OT Robbie Doane (corporate communications),
sophomore C Jason Glynn (communications), senior DB Brandon Hedgecock
(biology), senior WR Richard Hightower (business marketing), junior
RB Brett Robin
(kinesiology/pre-med),
junior DB Tien Van Nguyen (business finance) and senior LB Corey
Weideman (economics) were the nine Longhorns selected to the first
team. First-team members consist of those student-athletes who
have maintained a 3.2 grade-point average or better.
Junior OG Tillman Holloway (business finance), junior DS Cullen
Loeffler, senior RB C.J. Martin (business finance), junior LB Stevie
Stigall (communications), junior DE Kalen Thornton (business finance),
senior WR Michael Ungar (sociology) and senior OL Keith Virdell
(kinesiology) each were second-team selections. To be eligible for
the second team, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00-3.19 GPA.
Doane, Loeffler and Robin each earned academic all-conference honors
for the third consecutive season, while Bates, Glynn, Hightower,
Holloway, Thornton and Van Nguyen were selected for the second year
in a row. Robin was a first-team Verizon Academic All-District VI
selection two weeks ago and is on the ballot for the Academic All-America
team, while Doane, Glynn and Thornton were second-team All-District
VI choices.
