Kalen Thornton is a talented and explosive fourth-year defensive end who has taken on a leadership role on the defensive line in 2003. In his regular series, "K.T. On the Edge," Thornton brings fans interviews with his teammates from his perspective, "on the edge." The Dallas native is a candidate for the Ted Hendricks Award, given to the nation's top defensive end. Vince, I know how competitive you are, so have you adjusted into your starting role at quarterback? Also, how are you looking to continue to be a leader and build on the success you have had so far this year?
"Right now, I'm just relaxing and going out and playing my game. I'm trying to keep everybody focused and motivated, but at the same time acting crazy and having fun. That's my type of character as a quarterback right now. I have taken to the role as the starting quarterback right now, so I'm just very comfortable going into each game. I've just been staying comfortable and trying to get myself prepared for each game right now."
How frustrating was it for you last year having to sit back and look from the sidelines? I could tell you just wanted to be out there making plays. How difficult was that for you and how good does it feel to be out on the field this year?
"I was frustrated, as you could tell. You were one of those guys on the scout team with me. I was running or throwing the ball in practice trying to get you guys ready to play the opponent for that week. I just wanted to stay motivated to play the game. It was very hard and it was a great learning experience for me. I think it's going to be like that when I go to the NFL where I'll have to sit out and wait my turn. So, I just have to stay with it."
You're from H-town (Houston) and I'm a big fan of the food down there. Why don't you name some famous restaurants I would like to visit when I come down to Houston next time?
"Well first off, if you are on 610 going north heading downtown you can stop at the aquarium. You can just sit there and relax with all the fish around you. It's a very romantic spot and you could bring your girl with you or something. My favorite places to eat are probably those off the 610 south over there by my area near Reliant Stadium. You tell them V. Young sent you, and I have some great friends over there. They will take care of you. I have some great friends over there."
Tell me about Frenchy's Chicken.
"Frenchy's has the best fries and chicken, and to top it off, you have to have their strawberry soda. They probably have the best batch around. And, if you want to go all out you need to get some sweet corn bread. Everybody knows about it down in Houston."
VY has been notorious for getting everybody jumping before the game. What's probably your favorite chant or song you do before the game to get everybody ready to play?
"My favorite chant right now is the 'man' chant. I like to say that a couple of times to get everybody into it and get a nice little beat going. We have a couple of dancers on the team and they like to do their own thing. Coach Madden likes it lot, as well. Coming out of the smoke in the tunnel and saying the 'man' chant just helps us get pumped for the game. I just enjoy going out there and having fun. It gets us ready to make plays on defense, offense and special teams."
Are there any shout outs you would like to give?
"I have to give a shout out to the entire offensive line. They are doing a great job and I love those guys. They are up there blocking and moving the ball down field, knocking people on their butts. As you can see, our rushing attack is doing a great job and our passing is beginning to unfold because teams are starting to feed on the run now. We are going to start opening the passing game up. The o-line has kept Chance, Matt and myself protected back there all season, so I just wanted to say thank you. I also want to give a shout out to the whole defense. They are doing a great job. The defensive line is doing a great job up front; KT you are one of those d-linemen. I want to give you a shout out, as well. The whole defense is out there making plays. Our defensive backs are coming up making great tackles in the backfield. Those are the plays that are going to help us reach our goals at the end of the season. The defense just needs to keep it up, while continuing to give us the ball because we are going to make something happen on offense."
You have played against some great defensive ends this season. Can you please tell the entire nation what its like having KT coming around that edge in practice. I know you can feel me. Just let everybody know what I'm working with?
"This guy, I call him crazy, maniac guy. I tell Chance every time he goes in practice he has to watch KT. He had a great summer and a great everything. He was out there working hard with his quick feet and hands, and I was paying attention to those things. So when I was in practice, I would give him a little glance to see where he was because I knew he was going to make me move out of the pocket. I keep a good eye on this guy. He is a great guy and he is going to be great in the future like he is now. I just want to say keep it up KT. But right now, you better just watch out when you come too fast, I might just cut around you." |
