Longhorns celebrate season at annual awards banquet

2004 Longhorn Team Honors
AUSTIN, Texas — The University of
Texas football team had its annual awards banquet on Friday, Dec.
10 at the Frank Erwin Center, where the Longhorns honored this
season's most outstanding individuals for their contributions on
the football field, academically and within the Austin community.
There were two special presentations at this year's banquet. Representatives
of the Rose Bowl presented head coach Mack Brown with a rose in honor
of UT's first trip to the storied bowl game while sophomore running
back and former Marine Ahmard Hall received the Pat Tillman Award,
which was created in honor of the fallen Army Ranger's memory.
Despite their absence due to national award
banquet obligations, senior leaders Cedric Benson and Derrick Johnson
headlined the list of honorees, sharing the George "Hook" McCullough
MVP Award and the Team Captains Award. Benson also claimed the
Darrell K Royal Most Valuable Offensive Player Award and the Outstanding
Offensive Back Award. Johnson was distinguished as the Mike Campbell
Most Valuable Defensive Player and the Outstanding Linebacker to
go along with the Joseph W. Moore Award for tenacity and the Roy
Williams/Joe Jamail Leadership Award.
The program also included awards at each position group. Sophomore
Vince Young was named the Outstanding Quarterback, senior Tony Jeffery
claimed the Outstanding Receiver Award, senior Bo Scaife and junior
David Thomas shared the Outstanding Tight Ends Award and the quartet
of senior Jason Glynn, juniors Will Allen and Jonathan Scott and
sophomore Justin Blalock were named Outstanding Offensive Linemen.
Sophomore OG Kasey Studdard earned the Most Improved Offensive Player
Award while the Most Consistent Offensive Player Award went to senior
RB Will Matthews. Freshmen Nate Jones (WR), Limas Sweed (WR) and
Ramonce Taylor (RB) were recognized as the Outstanding Offensive
Newcomers.
On defense, juniors Larry Dibbles and Rod Wright earned the Outstanding
Defensive Linemen Awards, sophomores Tim Crowder and Brian Robison
shared the Outstanding Defensive Ends Award and the trio of senior
Phillip Geiggar and juniors Cedric Griffin and Michael Huff were
named the Outstanding Defensive Backs. Dibbles, junior LB Aaron Harris
and Robison were honored as the Most Improved Defensive Players while
Geiggar received the Most Consistent Defensive Player Award. Freshmen
DTs Derek Lokey and Frank Okam were distinguished as the Outstanding
Defensive Newcomers.
Members of the special teams were also rewarded for their contributions
this season. Senior Stevie Stigall, junior Richmond McGee and sophomores
Michael Griffin and Ahmard Hall each claimed the Frank Denius Most
Valuable Special Teams Player Award.
A series of "Whatever It Takes" Awards
were also handed out. Student assistant coaches Anthony Johnson,
Brad Price and Austin Sendlein were honored along with junior LB
Eric Hall, sophomores Tarell Brown (CB), Aaron Ross (CB) and Neale
Tweedie (DE) and freshman CB Bobby Tatum.
For their achievements in the classroom, senior OGTrey Bates joined
fellow-offensive lineman Glynn in receiving the Lan Hewlett Academic
Award.
Other awards were presented to senior PK Dusty Mangum, who was recognized
for his contribution in the community with the Coca-Cola Community
Service Award, senior QB Chance Mock, who was recognized with the
Longhorn Club Sportsmanship Award, and senior DT Stevie Lee, who
was tabbed the American Airlines D.X. Bible Most Team Spirited and
earned the D. Harold Byrd Leadership Award.
Roommates Blalock and Wright shared the
Dr. Nasser Al-Rashid Strength & Conditioning
Award while junior DE Aurmon Satchell claimed the Frank Medina Rehabilitation
Award.
