Run for the Roses: Frank Okam
Now that you've almost finished your first college season, how do you feel about its length?
I knew the season would be longer, but you never really know what it will be like until you go through it. I've been feeling the effects of it this week, so the upcoming days off will be very beneficial to me. I just want to get into the weight room and get some extra conditioning in, so I won't be worn down as much.
What advice have you gotten from the veteran defensive linemen?
I talked to them earlier in the year about how to stay fresh and they told me it was important to know how to practice. They explained how important it is to learn because the quality of reps is more important than the quantity of reps. It really helps to get things right the first time, so you don't have to keep going over things.
How did your first college season compare to high school?
I don't even think there is a comparison. I remember thinking during the Arkansas game that it was the worst game I ever played, but then I came back against Rice and got the team's first sack. Then, I ended the season chasing Reggie McNeal (Texas A&M's quarterback) all over the field. It's amazing how my confidence has grown and realizing that I can play at this level. It's helped to be around Rod (Wright), Stevie (Lee) and Larry (Dibbles) because they have played in big games and have shown me tips on how to get better.
How important is the mental part of the game?
I really think the mental part is more important than the physical part. Most guys who play at this level are here because they are physically capable. I learned early in the season that I would have to step my game up to a new level in order to be successful.
How do you feel getting the opportunity to play in the Rose Bowl as a freshman?
It is great to start off your college career by playing in the Rose Bowl. Hopefully, we can get better and play there again next year (The Rose Bowl will host the National Championship game next season). It is quite an honor to play on Texas' first Rose Bowl team and on a team with a great group of veteran leaders.
What do you know about Michigan's offensive line?
I've watched a lot of film on them and I feel like they are a combination of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State's offensive lines. I think they have some good athleticism along their line, so it will be important for us to be solid in our technique and hold our gaps. I think the game will come down to whose line does a better job.
How has been having fellow freshman Derek Lokey to grow with?
We got the award for defensive newcomers at the banquet and we joked how we'll get a defensive award for the next three years. It is nice to have someone there who is going through the same things you are. We've started to have some camaraderie and we'll eventually get to the point where we know exactly what the other one is doing. I'll be glad when we are finally out there wrecking shop together.
