Scott, Wright named to Outland Trophy watch list
Senior OT Jonathan Scott and DT Rod Wright have been named to the 2005 Outland Trophy watch list, the Football Writers Association of America announced Wednesday.
The Outland Trophy has been awarded to the best interior offensive or defensive lineman in college football since 1946. The winner is selected by the FWAA¹s All-America Committee, which selects the association's 25-man team and picks three Outland Trophy finalists.
Scott is a fourth-year starter who is a preseason first-team All-American. He earned second-team All-America (Associated Press and Sports Illustrated) and first-team All-Big 12 honors in 2004. A starter in the last 31 straight games, Scott helped pave the way for a UT offense that ranked second nationally in rushing (299.2 ypg), seventh in total offense (464.4 ypg) and 12th in scoring (35.3 ppg) last season. He was an anchor on a line that cleared the way for the Horns to rush for 232.5 yards per game (8th/NCAA) and 41.0 points per game (6th/NCAA) in 2003.
A preseason first-team All-American, Wright was previously named to the 2005 Lombardi (nation¹s top lineman), Bednarik Award (nation's top defensive player) and Nagurski Trophy (national defensive player of the year) watch lists. He is a fourth-year starter who has posted 181 tackles, 13 sacks, 28 TFLs, 52 QB pressures and forced five fumbles in 37 career games (32 starts). Wright earned second-team All-America honors from The Sporting News and was a first-team All-Big 12 performer last season.
The 2005 Outland Trophy announcement will be on Dec. 8 in Orlando, Fla., on the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show. The Outland Trophy presentation banquet, sponsored by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee and First Data Corporation, is set for Jan. 12, 2006, in Omaha, Neb. |
