Thomas tabbed FWAA Freshman All-American
Jan. 8, 2009
Texas redshirt freshman S Earl Thomas picked up his third Freshman All-America honor Thursday, when the Football Writers Association of America announced its team. Previously, Thomas had been named to the College Football News and Sporting News Freshman All-America teams. Thomas is the 20th Longhorn to earn Freshman All-America honors during the Mack Brown era and the third member of the secondary along with DB Michael Huff (2002) and S Dakarai Pearson (2000). An honorable mention All-Big 12 selection, Thomas started all 13 games in 2008 and finished second on the team in tackles with 72 (51 solo). He set a Texas freshman record with 17 pass breakups and tied for fourth on UT's freshman list with two INTs, which both came in the Horns' victory over Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry. The Orange, Texas native also tied for the team lead with four forced fumbles to go along with three TFL and a blocked punt. Thomas notched at least five tackles in nine of UT's 13 games, including a 10-tackle performance at Texas Tech and a nine-tackle game versus Oklahoma State. He also produced at least two PBU in eight games. Thomas capped his freshman season by posting a team-high nine tackles and two PBU in Texas' Fiesta Bowl victory over Ohio State.
