Cosby to sign as free agent with Cincinnati Bengals
April 26, 2009
Former Texas WR Quan Cosby has said he will sign as a free agent with the Cincinnati Bengals. Cosby received seven other offers following the conclusion of this year's draft. He will join former Longhorns RB Cedric Benson in Cincinnati. "Quan Cosby was an older guy when he came here, and he showed outstanding leadership for our young guys since the day he got here," Texas head coach Mack Brown said. "He’s a playmaker. Some people talk about what he doesn’t have. What he does have is heart and the ability to beat you." Cosby and his wife, Stasia, spent Sunday in New York with famed comedian Bill Cosby after the two became friends prior to one of Bill Cosby's shows in Austin. The two Cosbys made several live appearances during ESPN's draft coverage with reporter Erin Andrews. In 2008, Cosby was a Biletnikoff Award semifinalist (nation's top receiver) and first-team Academic All-Big 12 selection. He caught 92 passes (No. 2 on UT's single-season list) for 1,123 yards (No. 3 on UT's single-season list) and 10 TDs (T-No. 4 on UT's single-season list). He also returned 17 kickoffs for 350 yards and six punts for 38 yards, compiling 1,511 all-purpose yards on 115 plays (13.1 ypp). Cosby and fellow receiver Jordan Shipley became the most productive Longhorn receiving duo in a season in school history. They combined to catch 181 passes for 2,183 yards and 21 TDs. In the 2009 Fiesta Bowl, Cosby set a career high and UT bowl game record with 14 receptions, which is also the second-highest single-game total in school history, for 171 yards and two TDs. The 171 receiving yards rank 14th on UT's single-game list and second in bowl games. It marked just the eighth time a Texas receiver posted at least 100 yards in a bowl game. The two TD receptions also tied a UT bowl record.
For his career, he joined with QB Colt McCoy to become UT's all-time leading duo for completions between a QB and a WR with 191. Overall, he posted 212 receptions (No. 2 on UT's all-time list) for 2,598 yards (No. 3 on UT's all-time list) and 19 TDs (No. 4 on UT's all-time list) and caught a pass in 47 of 52 career games, including a streak of 44 consecutive games (No. 2 on UT's all-time list). Cosby also returned 73 kickoffs (No. 1 on UT's all-time list) for 1,731 yards (No. 1 on UT's all-time list), including a 91-yard TD, for a 23.7 ypr average (No. 6 on UT's all-time list) and 33 punts for 372 yards (11.3 ypr) and a TD. He recorded 4,701 all-purpose yards (No. 6 on UT's all-time list) on 318 career plays (14.8 ypp). |
