Goodwin captures second NCAA Outdoor Long Jump Championship
June 6, 2012 DES MOINES, Iowa – Junior WR/LJ Marquise Goodwin won his second career national championship in the long jump to help Texas gain first place on the first day of the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa at Drake Stadium. “It feels great,” said Goodwin. “I have a great supporting cast out here. It was a great day to compete out here. There were a lot of great competitors out here jumping that beat me before, but I just felt it today and went out there and got it done.” Goodwin posted the top four jumps of the day, ending with a personal best 8.23m (27-0) on his final attempt. He had four jumps over 8.10m, including his first jump of 8.19m (26-10.75) that put him in first place for the duration. “It was a good series,” said Goodwin. “During warm-ups I felt good, but during the 4x100 (relay) we had a little mishap and it kind of pushed me a little bit. It kind of gave me an extra edge today. It’s just one of those things that happens, but I tried to build off of it. I tried to put it behind me as fast as I could with limited time. I came out here and did what I needed to do today to get 10 points for the team.” The national championship for Goodwin is his second career title as he won the 2010 Outdoor NCAA Championship with a jump of 8.15m (26-9). He is the eighth athlete in school history to win multiple titles in a career and the second to do it in the long jump along with Eric Metcalf (1986 and 1988). Goodwin won his third Big 12 Outdoor Long Jump title in May when he broke the conference championship and Kansas State stadium record on his first attempt with a jump of 8.19m (26-10.50). Goodwin is the only athlete in Big 12 history to win both the indoor and outdoor long jump two straight years. In February, Goodwin defended his Big 12 Indoor Long Jump Championship with a jump of 25-4.75. Goodwin previously had won the long jump title at the 2011 U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships (personal best 27-4) along with the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Long Jump title as well as the 2010 and 2011 Big 12 Outdoor Long Jump Championships, the 2011 Big 12 Indoor Long Jump title and is a two-time World Junior Champion (long jump, 4x100m).
Goodwin captured the school indoor long jump record when he jumped 26-8.5 on January 28, 2011 breaking former Longhorn long jumper/running back Eric Metcalf's previous school record of 26-0 set in 1986. On the gridiron, Goodwin has played in 37 games, including 16 starts, for his career and has made 94 receptions for 1,024 yards (10.9 ypc) and four TDs. He also has 33 rushes for 265 yards (8.0 ypr), 31 kickoff returns for 658 yards (21.2 ypr) and one TD, and one punt return for 22 yards. Goodwin has amassed 1,969 all-purpose yards in his career. Goodwin’s championship performance on Wednesday along with two other athletes garnering All-America honors helped Texas take the overall lead after the first day. The Longhorns scored 17 points and are up four on second place Nebraska. For a full recap of the Longhorns' performances in the NCAA meet click here. |
