Meet the freshman Q&A: Malcom Brown

June 11, 2012

Your first name is spelled different from other "Malcolms." How did that come about? That is just how I spelled my name. [It's] something different. You know, I never had anyone with the same name as me. They told me there was a Malcolm Brown already at Texas at the beginning of recruitment.

Are you worried about teammates and coaches getting you confused with RB Malcom Brown? Probably a little bit. I imagine it is going to be, "Are you talking to me or are you talking to him?" And they should know who they are talking to. Most likely it will be defense talking to me and offense talking to him.

Why did you decide you wanted to play football at the University of Texas? It was right after Coach [Mack] Brown met my head coach from my high school. He asked me what my top five schools were and after I told him, he said to go look at them [and] write down the pros and cons [of each]. And after I did that, it was Texas.

Do you think you are ready to handle both football and academics at the college level? For me it is not a big deal because there are teachers here to teach you how to study. If you don't know how to study, then come over there with an ice bag or just figure out the crisis. Sometimes you just have to go with the flow. He really didn't do anything crazy. He is letting us get use to the workouts and everything but I am just going to roll with it and see what happens. It's cool that summer school allows us to get use to it before the fall.

Do you think your transition will be easier with former Brenham teammate Timothy Cole on the team? We have the same work ethic, and I know how hard he wants me to push him and he know how hard I want to be pushed. If he sees me struggling, he knows what to say to get me going. So I guess we are there for each other.

What advice did your family give you before you left home? Basically, get down there and take care of business. To just keep my head straight.

What are your thoughts on defensive tackles coach Bo Davis? He is a very cool coach. I like him because he is down to earth and very cool and always real with you. He is always cracking jokes, and I was happy with him.

What are your thoughts on head coach Mack Brown? Coach Brown is a cool coach. If you see him, he probably has a smile on his face. He is always encouraging you. He really cares about us.

What are your thoughts on beginning this new chapter in your life? It always feels like that, but I just think that it is another step in football and also another step in education. I just am ready to go, and it isn't really different to me. It is like there is more talent on the field, but I just have to get in there and not be scared. If I just do what I know how to do, who knows what will happen.

How do you think you will feel the first time you run out of the tunnel in DKR-Memorial Stadium? I am going to be really honored but also probably nervous. I have a lot of family watching me now, and I don't want to disappoint them. I have a lot of fans that I don't want to disappoint. I am going to be nervous, and it is going to be something new to me. I have played in front of a bunch of people in high school, but nothing like that.
