Meet the freshmen Q&A: Malcolm Brown

June 12, 2011

Why did you choose to attend the University of Texas?

The family atmosphere. I really felt comfortable with just the whole situation, and that was my main thing while being recruited. Just being comfortable with the coaches and the rest of the players I hadn't met before.

What are your feelings about head coach Mack Brown?
Coach Brown is a real friendly guy and anybody that meets him can tell that off the bat. Just him being that friendly type of person and getting along with everybody was a real plus.

How do you feel about the facilities here at Texas?
I could just tell everything here is great. It's a great foundation here and just seeing everything - the huge stadium that holds over 100,000 fans - everything is just nice around here. There's nothing sloppy. At Texas, it's just real nice around here.

How are you feeling about starting your college career?
It's pretty exciting and a little nerve-wracking at the same time, but I know once I get these first couple of weeks behind me I'll be a little bit more comfortable. As of right now I'm just trying to stay calm and chill, but in my mind I'm everywhere.

How did it feel winning the state championship as a senior in high school?
We always had the faith and everything that we could go far, but it was very surprising because not too many people thought we would even go that far. Honestly, some of us didn't really know. It was real fun and a great journey and the state game was crazy. We were real excited to play and real fortunate to get there and win it.

Did you enjoy the bit of time you had to relax after the state championship game?
It was nice because there was a whole bunch of stuff going on. Just to get that time and moment to chill out for a little bit was real cool. Even after everything was over, things were still kind of wound up a little bit, but overall it was fun.

What have you been doing this summer?

I've been working out a lot. That's what I've been really trying to do because I knew once I got up here they're going to have me lifting and everything. So I was just trying to come up here in shape.

What is it like rooming with DB Mykkele Thompson?
I knew him. I kept in touch with him a little bit. We both are right there in San Antonio, so I've known him for a little bit now and he's a real cool guy.

What was it like getting to meet the other freshmen?
Meeting all these dudes and [to] actually be face to face with everybody's going to be real fun, seeing what everybody's like.

How does it feel to be a college football player?
I'm not the type of person to think ahead about everything. I take it one day at a time. I'm just taking it as it comes. I'm just going to be chilling for a little bit until everything starts up. Hopefully everything goes smooth for me.

How will it feel to see your name on a Longhorn jersey?

I would have never imagined that I would be here right now. It's going to be real crazy to see my name on the back of a jersey like that.

How does it feel starting this new journey?
I'm kind of excited about just the whole atmosphere and once the season gets started just coming out of that tunnel. Coming out of the smoke with all the fans just yelling and stuff. Once I get situated it will be real fun but these first couple of games, maybe this first whole season, it will be nerve-wracking for me. But once I get situated, that's what I'm excited about.
