Texas seniors QB Colt McCoy and WR Jordan Shipley have been selected to the watch list for the 2009 Walter Camp Football Foundation Player of the Year award, the foundation has announced.
McCoy won the award last season becoming the second Longhorn to earn the honor, following RB Ricky Williams in 1998. McCoy was also a WCFF first-team All-American in 2008.
In 2008, McCoy went 332-of-433 (76.7%) for 3,859 yards and 34 TDs, with eight INTs, for a passer rating of 173.8, which ranked third nationally. His 76.7 completion percentage set the NCAA single-season record, surpassing Daunte Culpepper's mark of 73.6% set in 1998. He also set a UT single-season passing record against Texas A&M, bettering Major Applewhite's 3,357 yards in 1999.
McCoy posted a UT-record 4,420 yards of total offense, passing Vince Young (4,086 yards, 2005) in the Fiesta Bowl, and averaged 7.8 yards per play and 340.0 total yards per game, which ranked fifth nationally.
With 12 wins in 2008, McCoy has a career record of 32-7, which is first on UT's all-time victories list, passing Vince Young (30-2, 2003-05). During his 39-game career, McCoy has completed 825-of-1,175 passes (70.2%/No. 1 on UT's all-time list) for 9,732 yards and 85 TDs against 33 INTs for a passer rating of 158.0 (No. 1 on UT's all-time list). His 9,732 yards, 85 career TD passes, 825 completions and 1,175 attempts are all the most in UT history. McCoy also ranks first on UT's TDs responsible for list with 102.
In addition, McCoy has rushed for 1,223 yards and 17 TDs on 318 carries (3.8 ypc) and has rushed and passed for a TD in the same game 12 times during his career. Overall, McCoy is UT's all-time leader in total offense, having produced 10,955 yards to better Vince Young's 9,167 total yards.
An Academic All-America nominee and three-time first-team Academic All-Big 12 selection, McCoy is on pace to graduate in December with a degree in sports management. He also is one of UT's most active community service participants and has been selected to the Allstate AFCA and Big 12 Good Works teams. McCoy has spent his last two spring breaks traveling to Peru to perform mission work, and he regularly serves as a featured speaker representing the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
A third-team All-American (AP), consensus first-team All-Big 12 receiver and standout punt and kickoff returner, Shipley became the first player in Longhorn history to score by reception, kickoff and punt return in the same year last season. He was granted a sixth year of eligibility prior to the Longhorns’ Tostitos Fiesta Bowl victory over Ohio State, during which he had 10 catches for 78 yards and returned four kickoffs for 82 yards. Knee and hamstring injuries forced Shipley to miss the entire 2004 and 2005 seasons.
Shipley’s 89 catches last season rank third on the UT all-time season list, while his 1,060 receiving yards stand sixth and his 11 TD receptions rank third. He currently is tied for second on the Longhorns career TD receptions chart (20), is sixth in career receptions (132) and eighth in career receiving yards (1,706). His eight straight games with a TD reception in 2008 were a Longhorn school record, and he’s just the fourth player in UT history to return a punt and a kickoff for a TD during a career, which he did in one season.
Shipley and fellow receiver Quan Cosby (92 receptions for 1,123 yards and 10 TDs) became the most productive Longhorn receiving duo in a season in school history last year. They combined to catch 181 passes for 2,183 yards and 21 TDs. It was just the 11th time in NCAA history a pair of receivers on the same team had 85-plus catches and 1,000-plus receiving yards each.
Shipley graduated in December 2008 with a degree in kinesiology and is now enrolled in graduate school. A member of UT's Athletics Director's Honor Roll, he is active in UT's community service program and has made numerous individual speaking appearances.
The watch list will be narrowed to 10 semi-finalists in early November. The 2009 Walter Camp Player of the Year recipient, which is voted on by the 119 NCAA Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors, will be announced live on the ESPN SportsCenter on December 10. The winner will then receive his trophy at the Foundation’s annual national awards banquet on January 18, 2010 at the Yale University Commons in New Haven.
Walter Camp, “The Father of American football,” first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp – a former Yale University athlete and football coach – is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to 11 men per side. The Walter Camp Football Foundation – a New Haven-based all-volunteer group – was founded in 1967 to perpetuate the ideals of Camp and to continue the tradition of selecting annually an All-America team.
