Austin -– Results of a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed that Longhorn redshirt freshman tight end D.J. Grant sustained damage to multiple ligaments in his left knee during practice on Wednesday. The injury will require season-ending surgery, UT head athletic trainer for football Kenny Boyd confirmed on Thursday.

The 6-3, 220-pound Grant, a second year player who moved from wide receiver to tight end during bowl practices last season, redshirted in 2008. A prep All-American at Austin’s LBJ High School, Grant caught 41 passes for 1,142 yards and 16 TDs in his final two prep seasons.

“We’re disappointed for D.J.,” said Mack Brown. “He’s worked really hard and was ready to compete for playing time this season. We’ll miss having him out on the field but we will be there to support him throughout his rehab. Fortunately we’ll still have him around learning the position and helping the team at practices and meetings. He’s a great kid and we know he’ll get healthy, work hard in his rehabilitation and has a bright future.”
