Ash named National Quarterback of the Week

Sept. 17, 2012

Texas Longhorns sophomore quarterback David Ash has been selected as the College Football Performance Awards National Quarterback of the Week, the CFPA announced on Sunday. Three other Longhorns also earned CFPA honors; senior WR Marquise Goodwin was selected as Honorable Mention All-Purpose Performer of the Week, sophomore CB Quandre Diggs was selected as Honorable Mention Defensive Back of the Week and sophomore LB Steve Edmond was selected Honorable Mention Linebacker of the Week.

In the Longhorns 66-31 win over Ole Miss on Saturday, Ash completed 19 of 23 passes for a career-high 326 yards and a career-best four TDs. He has thrown seven touchdowns this season with no interceptions. Ash connected on 15 straight passes in the game. The school record for consecutive passes is 18 set by Colt McCoy vs. Oklahoma State in 2008. Ash now has 96 consecutive passing attempts without an interception. Ash also had 19 yards rushing to tally a career-high 345 total yards of offense for the game. For the season, Ash has completed 55 passes on 72 attempts (76.4%) for 703 yards and seven touchdowns with no interceptions and has rushed for 58 net yards on 11 carries with a 49-yard touchdown against New Mexico.

Goodwin had a career-high 198 all-purpose yards (102 receiving/80 rushing/16 kickoff returns) and two touchdowns against Ole Miss. Fresh off a trip to the White House with his Olympic teammates, Goodwin scored on a 69-yard run in the second quarter. It was the sixth touchdown of his career (four receiving/one KR), but his first on the ground. It was the longest rushing score by UT since Jamaal Charles went 75 yards vs. Oklahoma State (11/3/07). He later scored on a 55-yard pass from David Ash, his seventh career touchdown. For the season, Goodwin has two carries for 80 yards and a touchdown, five receptions for 125 yards and a touchdown and two kickoff returns for 48 yards.

Diggs recorded his sixth-career interception (second of the season) to end Ole Miss's second-quarter drive in UT territory. The Horns went down the field to score their fourth TD of the half. He added his second pick of the game at the end of the third quarter. He now has three interceptions for the season to go with eight tackles (4 solo) and one TFL. He has also returned two punts for 49 yards.

Edmond finished the game against Ole Miss with five tackles (3 solo) and a first quarter 22-yard interception return for a touchdown of Ole Miss QB Bo Wallace for the Longhorns first score of the night. It was Texas' first interception for a TD since Carrington Byndom went 58 yards for a touchdown against Texas A&M last season. Emmanuel Acho was the last UT linebacker to score on an interception return (57 yards vs. Florida Atlantic, Nov. 20, 2010). For the season, Edmond has 22 tackles (8 solo), one interception for a TD and two TFL.
