Texas Longhorns sophomore quarterback David Ash has been selected as the Davey O’Brien Quarterback of the Week, the Davey O’Brien Award announced on Monday.

In the Longhorns 66-31 win over Ole Miss on Saturday, Ash completed 19 of 23 passes for a career-high 326 yards and a career-best four TDs with no interceptions. His career-high passing efficiency rating of 259.06 is the third-best mark by any FBS quarterback this season and the top mark against a BCS team.

Ash connected on 15 straight passes in the game while leading the Horns to 676 yards of total offense, the second highest offensive output in a game in school history. The school record for consecutive passes is 18 set by Colt McCoy vs. Oklahoma State in 2008. Ash now has 96 consecutive passing attempts without an interception dating back to last season. Ash also had 19 yards rushing to tally a career-high 345 total yards of offense for the game.

Ash helped the Longhorns post more than 300 yards passing (326) and rushing (350) for just the third time in school history (first time in a road game), and its 66 points were the most in a game since the 2005 Big 12 Championship win over Colorado (70-3). It was the most points Ole Miss had given up in a game since 1917.

“He’s been doing great all of these games we’ve had so far,” said offensive guard Trey Hopkins. “He really took charge of the huddle, took charge of the game in general. He led us out there, and as you can see, it worked for us.”

The sophomore from Belton threw TD passes of 46 and 55 yards to wide receivers Mike Davis and Marquise Goodwin, respectively. Davis (124) and Goodwin (102) each posted 100 receiving yards in the game. It marked the 12th time in school history that feat occurred. Goodwin (5-129) and Jaxon Shipley (4-121) each went over 100 receiving yards last season at Baylor.

For the season, Ash has completed 55 passes on 72 attempts (76.4%) for 703 yards and seven touchdowns with no interceptions and has rushed for 58 net yards on 11 carries with a 49-yard touchdown against New Mexico.

During the first eight weeks of the season, a subset of the Davey O'Brien National Selection Committee will name a Davey O'Brien Quarterback of the Week. All 124 NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision quarterbacks are candidates for the award until semifinalists are announced Oct. 22. Finalists will be announced Nov. 19 and the 2012 Davey O'Brien Winner will be announced Dec. 6. 

The Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award is presented annually to the nation’s best college quarterback and is the oldest and most prestigious national quarterback award. The Davey O’Brien Award honors candidates who exemplify Davey O’Brien’s enduring character while exhibiting teamwork, sportsmanship and leadership in both academics and athletics.
