 
Miller named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week

AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas senior DT Roy Miller has been selected as the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week for games played on Oct. 4, the conference office has announced. Miller helped lead the Longhorns to a 38-14 victory over Colorado in Boulder in which he notched a season-high eight tackles, including a TFL, three pressures, two PBD and a fumble recovery. His third-quarter fumble recovery set up the offense on the CU 18-yard line and led to a touchdown to give Texas a 28-0 lead. UT's defense held a Colorado offense that was averaging 340.5 yards per game to just 266 total yards (217p/49r). Prior to the final drive, when Texas was leading 38-7, Colorado had posted just 177 yards on 59 plays (3.0 ypp), including 13 yards rushing on 24 attempts (0.5 ypc). This marks the first time in Miller's career he has earned Big 12 Player of the Week honors, and it is the second time a Longhorn has been named player of the week this season. Colt McCoy was named Offensive Player of the Week following the 52-10 win over Florida Atlantic on Aug. 30. Miller, who is a member of the preseason Bednarik Award (nation's top defensive player) watch list, has tallied 20 tackles (12 solo), three TFL, 13 pressures, two PBD and a fumble recovery this season. His ability to hold the point of attack in UT's defensive scheme thanks to a 500 lbs. bench press, 690 lbs. squat and 350 lbs. power clean has the Horns ranked third nationally in rush defense and first in the Big 12 (51.8 ypg). The Texas defense is allowing just 11.4 points per game (fourth NCAA/first Big 12) in 2008. The unit has only given up five TDs on the season (the sixth came on a fumble return for a TD), and has not allowed a rushing TD this year. Miller has played in 41 career games (11 starts) and has recorded 109 tackles (52 solo), 17 TFL, 4.5 sacks, 29 pressures, four PBD and a fumble recovery.
