Tracking the Longhorns: Oct. 6

Oct. 6, 2009

LB Roddrick Muckelroy
On starting the second part of the season: We’re 0-0, starting the season over with.  Going back, we had the off-week, had time to go back through and work on the basics, tighten up on your basics and go back to your fundamentals.  We’re starting back over, a new season.

On what the team has learned: We’ve learned that we have a lot more hard work to do to become the team that we want to be.  We just have to continue working every day and make progress, and hopefully be the team we want to be.

On Colorado:
They’re a good team.  They’ve got a lot of different things, a lot of tricks, a lot of different motions here and there.  It’s a team that you’ve really got to prepare for.  It’s a lot that you have to prepare for.  You’ve got to be prepared going into the game or they’ll surprise you.

On not thinking ahead:
You’ve just got to focus on this game – one game at a time.  When you get thinking down the line or thinking about different teams, the team in front of you will sneak up and bite you.

RB Tre’ Newton
On what his father (former Dallas Cowboy Nate Newton) has told him:
He just asks me if I’m having fun, protect the quarterback, protect the ball.  That’s all he says.  He’s always asking about my grades.

On having a four running back rotation:
It’s a lot of fun.  We all try to work hard during the week so we’re ready when the game comes.  We each bring different things to the table, so it’s a lot of fun.

On the weekend off: I think the weekend off was needed.  I got a little bit of rest.  We took the week and practiced and got better at the things we needed to get better at.  I think it helped us.  It was a good week of work.

On sharing time with the other running backs: We all just try to work hard.  Whenever our number is called we try to go out there and do our best.  Whatever coach needs us to do, that’s what we try to do.

On Colorado’s defense:
They’ll be ready. They’re a good team. They’ll be ready for us. We’ve just got to keep on doing what we’re doing this week and work hard and be ready and know our assignments and things like that.

RB Vondrell McGee
On what he expects from the second part of the season:
You’re going to see everything – good blocking, protecting Colt, good ball security.  We practice that every day.

On managing the four running back rotation: I think we use it to our advantage.  We wear defenses down with four backs getting in there with fresh legs running the ball.  I think it wears defenses down.

On Colorado’s defense: You’ve got to run the ball better than they do. So, just try to not let them outrush us, not give up any fumbles to their defenses, and keep the ball in Colt’s hands.

On taking the season on week at a time:
We just use this week to get better and focus on Colorado and what they have to bring.  They’ve got a lot of good players.  We want to use this game to get better like we do with every game.

WR John Chiles
On the wide receivers:
We have a lot of different guys. Colt (McCoy) has a lot of options. (Jordan) Shipley is our number one receiver, but other than that, Colt has a lot of options.

On what he learns from Jordan Shipley:
A lot. I watch him all the time. He’s an amazing route runner, and I think that’s something that I can improve on, so a lot of it is just watching his technique and watching any little pointer that he can give me.

On working out with former Texas WR Quan Cosby this summer:
I worked out with Quan (Cosby) a lot this summer. He was doing a lot of drills to get his legs stronger. I am fortunate to have naturally strong legs, so I do get a lot of help from him.

On how the team avoids upsets: We’ve got to stay focused. We can’t look ahead. We’ve got to be focused on this week, on Colorado.

On the switch from quarterback to wide receiver:
I’m liking it a lot now. I’m glad I made the switch. I prayed about it a lot and now I know it was the right decision.

On how he improves as a wideout:
Each and every day I try to focus on correcting the mistakes from the last day. If I made a mistake from the practice before, I go out the next day and try to focus on correcting it.

DE/LB Sergio Kindle
On the defense’s focus this week:
We’re just going to go into this game like we do every game. It’s just a different scheme based off of their offense.

On attempting to bat down passes: You always want to put emphasis on getting your hands up against every quarterback, but that is a big deal of emphasis to put our hands up because he’s basically hiding behind those big linemen.

On Colorado RB Rodney Stewart: If you lose your lane then he’s quick enough to bounce it and take it the distance. First of all, we have to stay disciplined. If we do that, then we have to have faith in the guys behind us to play their gaps.

On how the team determines it pass rush:
What we do is, we have to watch film and watch how the offensive line is set, and that’s where we base what type of pass rush we do for that week. We put a lot of emphasis in the type of pass rush we’re going to use based off of the tackle.
