Texas Athletics is committed to raising public awareness regarding breast cancer and breast health initiatives at our home sporting events, and recently started a campaign to do just that. It is called Horns For Hope.
The Texas Football team is the latest to join the Horns For Hope initiative. When the Longhorns take the field this Saturday against the Colorado Buffaloes, they will do so in part to raise public awareness of breast cancer by wearing a pink ribbon sticker on the back of every player's helmet, while the UT coaches will wear pink lapel pins. Members of the team and staff will also dedicate the game to any family member or friend affected by breast cancer.
"Breast cancer is an awful disease, and we would like for everybody's thoughts and prayers to be with the people who are afflicted by that disease and their families -- not only during this month of national breast cancer awareness, but year-round," UT head coach Mack Brown said.
In addition, educational materials on the disease will be distributed on the concourses of Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium and announcements will be made over the public address system throughout the game.
The Horns For Hope initiative has been highlighted in the past by two events -- "Volley for the Cure" at Texas Volleyball matches, and the "WBCA PinkZone" at Texas Women's Basketball games. The Horns for Hope campaign will continue on Oct. 21 when Texas Volleyball hosts Missouri at Gregory Gymnasium, then will pick up again on Jan. 31 when Texas Women's Basketball takes on Baylor. The Pink ZoneTM initiative is the WBCA's unified effort for coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.
This Saturday, we hope you not only cheer on your Longhorns, but also learn some important facts about breast health and then spread the word throughout the community.
