Monroe earns CFPA honors

Texas Longhorns senior running back/wide receiver D.J. Monroe was named National Kickoff Returner of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) on Sunday for his performance against Kansas State this weekend. Senior P Alex King was named Honorable Mention Punter of the Week.

Against Kansas State, Monroe returned six kickoffs for 140 yards (23.3 avg) including a 72-yard return in the fourth quarter.

Monroe has now moved into second place all-time in career return yardage for a Texas Longhorn with 1,621 yards in returns (Quan Cosby #1, 1,731 yards). Monroe is also number two in career returns with 64, trailing only Cosby who had 73 career returns.

In 2012, Monroe leads the Longhorns with 17 kickoff returns for 451 yards (26.5 avg) which ranks second in the conference, and Monroe also has a 100-yard return for a touchdown against Oklahoma State.

King was honored after he punted three times for 130 yards for a 43.3 yards per punt average. King also placed one of his three punts inside the opponent’s 20-yard line.

For the season, King has punted 38 times for 1721 yards for a 45.3 yards per punt average. King also has punted the ball inside opponents’ 20-yard line 15 times and has nine punts of 50 yards or more. King’s per punt average would rank first in the conference and ninth in the nation if he had the required 3.6 punts per game (King averages 3.16 punts per game).
