DALLAS -- In arguably the finest individual Cotton Bowl performance ever, Bobby Layne accounted for all 40 of the Longhorns’ points in their 40-27 victory over Missouri. Layne threw for two touchdowns, ran for three, was on the receiving end of a 50-yard bomb and kicked all four extra points for 10th-ranked Texas.
Layne’s brilliance wasn’t limited to his scoring, however, as he connected on 11-of-12 passes for a stellar .917 completion percentage – the best in Cotton Bowl history. He completed his first eight attempts, most to his favorite target Hub Bechtol, who hauled in a Cotton Bowl record eight passes.
Texas went up 7-0 in the first quarter when Layne hit Joe Baumgardner for a 48-yard touchdown. After Missouri countered with a 51-yard scoring toss, Layne capped a 60-yard drive with a one-yard plunge and the Longhorns led 14-7 after one quarter.
A Texas turnover helped the Tigers knot things at 14-all, but Layne sent the Longhorns to the locker room with a 21-14 halftime lead thanks to his 10-yard scamper that capped a 69-yard, seven-play drive.
Layne once again found Baumgardner with a 15-yard strike in the third quarter, and the future NFL All-Pro put the game out of reach with two fourth-quarter scores, including a 50-yard touchdown reception from the arm of Ralph Ellsworth.
