DALLAS -- For the first time in 39 years, UT completed an undefeated regular season and entered its second consecutive Cotton Bowl ranked fourth nationally.

Their opponent was run-oriented and seventh-ranked LSU, which was making its first Cotton Bowl appearance in 16 years.

The Tigers abandoned their conservative run attack and launched an aerial assault on the Longhorns. LSU had completed only 40 passes during the regular season, but completed 13-of-21 against UT, just two completions shy of the Cotton Bowl record.

Both offenses stalled in the first quarter, but late in the half, the Tigers began to move. They drove from their 20 to the Texas 5-yard line, but had used all of their timeouts. With the clock rolling, LSU had no choice but to attempt a field goal on third down. PK Lynn Amedee booted a 23-yard field goal with eight seconds remaining, which marked the first Cotton Bowl field goal since 1942.

UT hoped to get rolling in the second half, but fumbled the opening kickoff at the 37. Two minutes later, LSU capitalized when QB Jimmy Field scored from 22 yards out on a scramble.

Amedee connected on his second field goal late in the game, a 37-yarder with 4:58 remaining, to finish off the 13-0 shutout. The Longhorns turned the ball over five times and were held to just 172 yards of total offense.
